Remove the Chip From Your Shoulder

I often hear the term ‘insecure overachiever’ touted as an aspirational mindset. There’s a class of people who are driven to great heights of achievement by what seems to be deep insecurity. I wouldn’t call myself an over achiever, but part of that being an ‘insecure overachiever’ resonates with me. Recently though, I’ve come to believe that framework of thinking is not beneficial.
It’s proven throughout history that people driven by a better ‘why’ and a belief in a more positive future tend to beat pessimists, ‘realists’ and people driven by a more negative view of reality. Until recently, I’ve had a chip on my shoulder which has caused me to be motivated by the desire to prove myself to others. This isn’t good. It’s inherently negative and defensive.
A better approach is confidence. Based on the people in my circles, the ones who have achieved the most tend to also have this same chip on their shoulder. Instead of valuing their own achievements and carrying a sense of self-confidence into their goals and the future they are driven by a sort of lacking. Working with a coach has helped me see that it’s far better to take a step back, appreciate your own achievements and step into the future with confidence that you will continue to achieve your goals.
If you, like me, have a chip on your shoulder I’d encourage you to take a step back. Look at your life, your achievements and appreciate your hard work. You’ve gotten to where you are in life, whether good or bad, based on your decisions and actions. You’re 100% responsible for your life which is something to take great pride in. Step into tomorrow with confidence knowing that as long as you continue to push, you’ll get results like in the past.
Best, Eric.
